On November 1st, 1954 Pondicherry along with its surrounding areas of Mahe, Yanam and Karaikal had their de facto transfer from France to the Republic of India. It was on this day that Pondicherry stopped being a French colony and became a Union Territory of India. After 60 years, November 1st is being celebrated as “Pondicherry’s Liberation Day”.
